Speakers:

  • Lynn Burkhart

    Dr. Leonard F. Burkhart, horticulturist for the Davey Resource Group, a division of the Davey Tree Expert Company. His job responsibilities include arboricultural and horticultural consulting, research and technical support for Davey field operations in Western Canada and the Western U.S.  Dr. Burkhart received his PhD in horticulture from the University of Illinois.  He is a qualified pesticide applicator in California and an ISA certified arborist. He will lecture on hazard trees.     

  • Lowell Catlett

    Dr. Lowell B. Catlett, economist, futurist, and professor at New Mexico State University.  He is the author of numerous books and articles and won the university's highest award to a professor in 1991, the Westhafer Award.  He works nationally and internationally with many of the leading corporations and organizations and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Labor, Interior, Defense, Education, and Energy doing futuristic planning concerning the impacts of technology on careers, lifestyle and economy.  His PhD is in Economics from Iowa State University.  He has delivered and invited presentations or been a visiting professor at over 30 of the nations leading universities including Harvard, MIT, and Texas A&M.  The title of his opening presentation is "McDonald's Eggs and The End of Childhood."

  • Robert Flynn

    Dr. Robert Flynn, soil scientist, professor, and specialist for New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service.  He received his PhD in Agronomy and Soils from Auburn University.  Dr. Flynn's extension program focuses on organic nutrient management for sustainable crop production and environmental protection, and basic education programs in soil fertility, plant nutrition, water use, and salinity.  Dr. Flynn is responsible for offering interpretations and recommendations for all soil test that pass through the NMSU soil testing laboratory.  He will lecture on characteristics of and management strategies for New Mexico Soils.

  • Natalie Goldberg

    Dr. Natalie Goldberg, Extension Plant Pathologist for New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service.  She received her PhD in plant pathology from the University of Arizona.  Dr. Goldberg operates the plant diagnostic clinic for the State of New Mexico which processes approximately 900 plants each year.  She has written numerous educational publications on plant diseases and their management.  Dr. Goldberg will lecture on Common Tree Diseases and Management in New Mexico.

  • Jeff Hart

    Jeff Hart, Urban Forester for the City of Albuquerque. He will give a brief talk on the use of Global Position Systems in mapping parks and pinpointing the condition of trees.  As Urban Forester, he is responsible for plant selection, maintenance and pest control for all city-owned parks.  Hart is a Certified Arborist and Certified Irrigation Auditor. He received his BS in Plant and Soil Science from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.  He is a member of the Think Trees Committee.

  • Larry Helberg

    Lawrence B. Helberg received his formal education in Forestry and Plant Pathology with both his undergraduate and graduate work done at Colorado State University.  He began working for the Colorado State Forest Service, a division of Colorado State University, in 1971 as Dutch elm disease Project Leader.  In 1982 he transferred to the Community Forestry Division to monitor and assist communities in their total tree resource management systems.  He transferred to the Conservation Education Division in 1989.  He taught a course in Community Forest Management for 12 years and a course in Arboriculture for 2 years which was later condensed into a 2 day traveling short course. He uses a unique blend of historical characters, stories and current trends to point out to young (and old) audiences what we have done in the past and what needs to be done in the future.  Since retiring, he is in frequent demand for his short course and lectures. 

  • George Hessenthaler

    George Hessenthaler, Founder and Owner of Urban Forest Woodworks in Logan Utah.  He has a degree in journalism and worked in journalism and public relations in the early part of his career.  While writing an article for Ducks Unlimited magazine he became familiar the art of marquetry.  He began his first business manufacturing wooden boxes decorated with marquetry inlays and almost went broke.    Since then, George has started several successful wood industry related manufacturing business and has spawned 10 patents with several others currently pending.  His current business, Urban Forest Woodworks, employs seven and makes wooden boxes fabricated entirely from discarded city hardwood trees.   He will speak on Utilizing Tree Waste for Fine Wood Products.

  • Bonnie Rabe

    Bonnie Rabe, Pesticide Specialist with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.  Bonnie worked in private industry for one year and did private research for one year before joining the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.  Bonnie will focus her breakout talks on pesticides and pesticide safety. Each of her talks will count for 1 pesticide continuing education unit (CEU) from the New Mexico Department of Agriculture.   

  • Tom Smiley

    Dr. E. Thomas Smiley, arboricultural researcher at the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory in Charlotte, North Carolina. He received his PhD in Urban Forestry from Michigan State University.  He has an active research and training program at the Laboratory that focuses on many different aspects of tree care.  Recent Studies have included work on lightning protection, mycorrhizae, tree bolting, tree risk assessment, fertilization, soil compaction, tree growth regulators, and other soil amendments.  He is the author of over 100 scientific papers, magazine articles, books and videotapes.  He will lecture on the salvaging of older trees.

  • Carol Sutherland

    Dr. Carol Sutherland, serves a dual role while working for both the New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) and the New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service.  As State Entomologist, for NMDA, Dr. Sutherland identifies unknown specimens and provides entomological support for various projects in nursery industries, apiculture, and plant based agriculture throughout the state.  In her Extension Service role, along with identifying insects sent to her from around the state, she works to educate all ages by speaking at educational programs and workshops.  She received her PhD in general entomology from Oregon State University.  Dr. Sutherland will speak on insect pests.
